Weather Station
A weather station is a land- or sea-based facility equipped with specialized instruments to measure atmospheric conditions for accurate weather forecasting, climate research, and environmental monitoring. These stations record key parameters such as temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, and precipitation. To ensure reliable readings, wind sensors are placed in open areas free from obstructions, while temperature and humidity sensors are shielded from direct solar radiation. Manual observations are typically taken at least once daily, while automated stations collect data at least once every hour.
Core Instruments of a Typical Weather Station
- Thermometer – Measures air and sea surface temperature
- Barometer – Measures atmospheric pressure
- Hygrometer – Measures humidity
- Anemometer – Measures wind speed
- Pyranometer – Measures solar radiation
- Rain Gauge – Measures precipitation amounts
